Cabrillo National Monument

On Tuesday afternoon, we decided to head to Cabrillo National Monument, which is at the tip of the peninsula that forms San Diego Bay. My dad had recommended it, so we thought we go and catch the sunset there. We arrived at 4 pm and the park closes at 5, which we thought would be plenty of time. Boy, were we wrong. We first headed down to the tidal pools, which closed at 4:30. The sun was just setting, and it was simply gorgeous. The path went on for a while, so we decided we would have to come back at low tide instead of the current high tide.

We came back on Thursday morning and visited the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. It was discontinued because of it's placement high up on the top of the peninsula. The fog would often obscure it. Instead, they built a new one lower in elevation on the tip of the peninsula. We also visited the Cabrillo Monument, dedicated to a Portuguese sailor who was the first European to land on the west coast of the United States. From the monument you get a lovely view of downtown San Diego. We ended our trip by proceeding to the tidal pools at low tide. Unfortunately, it was midday, so our hike ended up being a very hot one. But we got to see a few crabs caught in the tidal pools. I'd have to say that Cabrillo National Monument is another must-see if you are in San Diego.
